New York, New York–New York City is a booming hub for the diamond industry. Nestled in Midtown Manhattan, West 47th Street offers more than 4,000 wholesalers and retail jewelers, and is continuing to grow. Although the foundation of the Diamond District dates back as far as the 1920s, the world-famous stretch of Manhattan as we know it today didn’t start to take shape until a few decades later. VVS Jewelers is an independently owned diamond retailer in the heart of the district and has announced five ways in which it will be minimizing its environmental footprint.

  1. Repurposing old jewelry

CEO and Founder of VVS Jewelers, Reem Sulton, or Reem The Dream as she is known professionally, has expressed specialized interest in repurposing jewelry that would otherwise end up in a landfill. The company uses these outdated or in some cases, broken pieces to build something new that then can retain the sentimental value of the original piece for the client.

“Just the other day someone came in with his grandmother's old brooch that I've turned into grills for his teeth,” says Reem. VVS Jewelers is continuing this repurposing process in order to minimize waste at an individual consumer level.

      2. Recycling

Some pieces, which may be damaged beyond repair, are also saved and recycled. The gold is recycled into other pieces and the diamonds are stripped from the product and inspected. The diamonds that continue to meet the industry standard are cleaned and are then used during the creation of new collections and pieces.

VVS also gives clients the opportunity to have their jewelry and watches repaired in-store, regardless of where the product was purchased, to minimize damaged products ending up in the trash.

      3. Ethically sourced, genuine diamonds

VVS Jewelers offers documentation for its clients on each piece of jewelry sold. Sometimes, the Diamond District can hold many pitfalls, which includes the sale of counterfeit or unethically mined gems. VVS ensures that the pieces they produce contain diamonds that have been mined in ways that respect human rights and the environment.

        4. The use of sustainable packaging.

Though many clients may be seen in-store, VVS Jewelers offers product shipment. They are using recycled and biodegradable materials in order to package their shipments, minimizing plastic production that can be harmful to the environment.

         5. Keeping things small

Instead of mass producing their products, VVS Jewelers launches products one at a time, by custom request and produces in small batches. This small-scale operation prevents the over abundance of products that can be left unsold and then discarded.

VVS Jewelers is excited to be announcing this new step in changing the way that the jewelry industry operates on an ecological scale. With other retailers on their heels, the Diamond District of New York City is making a movement into ethically sourced and environmentally sound practices.

VVS Jewelers is a New York based jewelry company that focuses on customized pieces and luxury watches. Their CEO is one of the first women to break into the business. For more information regarding Reem The Dream and VVS Jewelers, see their website and instagram.
