Boxabl Brings High Quality to Affordable Housing

What if finding a home was as simple as shopping online? While the home buying process may never be quite as fast as clicking “add to cart,” Boxabl is streamlining the home industry with its easy-to-install pre-made homes. In 2017, founders Paolo Tiramani and Galiano Tiramani created a factory-based, home building operation with the objective of creating high quality sustainable housing options at an affordable price point.

“The industry itself was outdated and due for a refresh, as too many people were being priced out of the housing market, “ said Paolo. “We decided to change how houses are produced so that they would be more affordable. However, we didn’t reinvent the wheel - to reduce costs, we took a page from the auto industry. The assembly line allowed us the ability to mass produce a product in the shortest most cost-effective manner possible.” The result? They were able to trim months off the process of building a home and thousands of dollars off the price as well.

Typically, building a home involves heavy labor, sometimes in inclement weather, for months on end. Boxabl moved that process indoors to its factory, where it efficiently manufactures every aspect of its homes. Knowing how important it is for a home to feel personal, Boxabl also allows the client to create the home layout they prefer, similar to a life-size, stackable Lego configuration.

The Casita, Boxabl’s popular tiny home and very first product model, features a kitchen, bathroom, and all appliances in an apartment-style layout. Elegant upgrades such as deep soaking tubs, modern lighting fixtures and vessel sinks are some of the luxurious touches owners can opt for in these custom, manufactured homes.

“With Boxabl, we create a finished home that is ready to ship in one minute,” said Galiano. “This cuts down on significant costs, which are a large part of why buying a home remains out of reach for many who simply can’t afford it.”

Boxabl’s innovative approach to housing has caught the attention of Elon Musk, who purchased one of the startup's earlier prototypes. After the billionaire tweeted the delivery of his custom Boxabl home, interest in the new startup skyrocketed. Elon Musk isn’t the only admirer of their work, as they currently have a waitlist of 110,000 customers eagerly looking forward to the delivery of their Casita model home.

What has made Boxabl a success so far is the level of quality in the homes they produce. “People assume affordable means cheap or low quality,” stated Galiano. “We are defying that expectation - we produce houses on an assembly-line within a factory, and they are built to last.”

For Boxabl, strong building materials are one of the most important aspects of their homes’ design. Their Casita model uses steel, concrete, and EPS foam. These are all non-biodegradable materials that are resistant to pests, mold, and other hazards. For extra protection against fire, hurricane-strength winds, and other acts of nature, the walls, roof, and flooring materials for the manufactured homes are produced with structurally laminated panels. With these top-tier features, the Casita tiny home is actually stronger than most newly built homes on the market today.

Another goal of the founders is to be able to provide affordable, easy-to-erect homes to quickly house those affected by hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. “Our Casita model can be unpacked in about an hour,” Galiano stated. “The impact on those displaced by disasters can’t be understated. Instead of waiting months to be housed, our product can significantly decrease the wait time and help get them back on their feet.”

As the housing market continues to change, Boxabl’s founders are excited about potential new opportunities. “We’re trying to become the biggest player in a $13 trillion global construction industry,” explained Paolo. The company has already expanded their original site to include a second assembly line factory. “Currently, we have the capacity to produce a complete home in approximately one minute,” stated Paulo. Boxabl’s unique home building company will be one to watch as the home buying market continues to evolve.
