Is Boxabl a Legitimate Company?

Boxabl, a construction/technology startup with an innovative approach to house-building, has become well-known for its business model which involves mass-producing houses in factories. The company became famous after Elon Musk confirmed that he had purchased one of their products, the Casita, for $50,000.

A 375 sq. ft. studio apartment configuration, the Casita was already fairly popular before Musk confirmed his purchase. After Musk’s announcement, the Casita’s waitlist grew to over 110,000 customers.

Along with the excitement surrounding the company for their construction innovations, which are anticipated to increase housing affordability by large margins, the company has faced some skepticism with regard to their legitimacy. Some commentators are doubting whether the company will provide all of their customers with the products they have paid for.

This skepticism is the result of the seemingly lopsided ratio between those who have received their Casitas versus those who have not. The apparently overwhelming majority of Boxabl’s customers who have not yet received their Casitas is partly the result of the aforementioned customer waitlist and partly the result of customers’ habits and predilections.

Quite unlike the garrulous Musk, many Casita purchasers do not notify the public about their recent home purchases via social media platforms. Many customers who have received their Casitas are more inclined to use their purchases to live off the grid, or in more rural and remote environments. In consequence, those who have received their Boxabl purchases tend to be less conspicuous than those who have not yet received their Casitas.

The skepticism directed toward Boxabl is also attributable to the company’s bold claim that they can help solve the following issues: the inaccessability of home ownership for millions of people; buildings with short-term utility and long-term environmental effects; the unwieldy length of time required to construct or renovate a house.

As Boxable is currently able to produce one house per minute, with significantly lessened overhead costs, the company is able to sell their houses at much lower prices than other developers while still turning a profit. If the company continues to profit and expand, it can be assumed that homeownership will become more accessible

Boxabl intends to lead the construction industry into becoming more streamlined and factory-orieted. If the company succeeds in this endeavor, the 11 trillion dollar construction industry would be able to produce homes for a greater variety of people, and would do so while negating most of the environmental costs associated with continuous development.

Because Boxabl houses are produced in factories, they do not expose the environment nearby to the pollution and environmental decay which typifies ongoing outdoor construction projects. They can be installed and removed from areas much more cleanly than traditional houses, resulting in less significant environmental impacts. Furthermore, a spokesperson for the company says, “Boxabl’s units are foldable—they can condense into compact form for shipment, and unfold on a lot in under an hour. This innovation makes transportation efficient, cost-effective, and less environmentally taxing than all other operations in the industry.”

Boxabl’s use of assembly line methods ensures a much speedier production of houses. If Boxabl continues to expand, and the company’s products become more commonplace, this would greatly reduce the waiting period that is currently the bane of all construction projects. Furthermore, owing to the Casita’s simplicity of design and highly compatible parts, the house is easily renovated and rearranged. With minimal time expenditure and at no extra cost, Casita owners can easily find the floor plan that suits them best.
