Survey: 80% of The Meatery's Customers Think Australian is the Best Wagyu Steak

SAN DIEGO, California – Based on data found in a survey of The Meatery’s customers after having tried both Japanese and Australian Wagyu, Australian Wagyu steak was found to be the favorite over the classic Japanese wagyu.

Surprisingly enough, the vast majority of our customers start out by trying Japanese A5 Wagyu steak but find it to be so intensely rich that they actually prefer Australian Wagyu steak, as it still "eats like a steak" while having 3x the marbling of a USDA Prime. As the Australian Wagyu steak typically has a lower BMS (Beef Marble Score), this Wagyu steak does not have nearly the level of richness or sweet flavors that are more present in the Japanese Wagyu steak. Australian Wagyu steak boasts a much more balanced, savory, and beefy flavor than the Japanese Wagyu steak.

As Wagyu cattle are raised differently in Australia, given a wider space to roam, a different diet, and a different feeding schedule, the Wagyu steak yielded from this cattle is inherently different from the Japanese Wagyu steak.

The Meatery Sells a Variety of Wagyu Steak

Nicholas Fiorentino founded TheMeatery.com in 2020 during the height of the pandemic to provide premium meats to consumers that couldn't go to restaurants. It has since grown very quickly, and today the company ships all throughout the USA and Canada, with many repeat customers who claim A5 Halal Wagyu from Australia is their favorite.

The company’s first 2 years have provided invaluable insight into its customers’ preferences and needs, including preparation recommendations. Fiorentino recently unveiled a new website and hopes to customize the shopping experience by matching customers with the perfect cut every single time. A new feature, Meatery Live, was created to allow customers to video chat directly with one of the company’s knowledgeable butchers and pick the exact steak that will be shipped. Over these last two years, TheMeatery.com has built a dedicated base of consumers, many of which have explained how appropriate the A5 Wagyu price is when considering the amazing dining experience one can have with a few cuts.

Find Out Which Steak You Prefer for Yourself

With many subtle, but noticeable differences between the Japanese A5 Wagyu steak and the Australian Wagyu steak, a diner simply needs to have both experiences for themselves to truly know what they prefer. The Australian Wagyu steak does not have nearly the level of richness or sweet flavors that are more present in the Japanese Wagyu steak. Australian Wagyu steak boasts a much more balanced, savory, and beefy flavor than the Japanese Wagyu steak. It’s not completely unlikely, though, that you may prefer the richer, more decadent, buttery, and sweet flavor of the Japanese Wagyu steak.
