Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef Goes Viral Online as Customers Marvel at its Unique Quality

SAN DIEGO, California – Food TikTok has blown up as viewers have been entranced by the rich marble and the mouthwatering quality of Japanese A5 Wagyu beef.

Characterized by an intense richness, gorgeous marbling, and a texture unlike any other steak on earth, Wagyu beef is Japanese cattle that are raised with a very specific set of conditions, feeding habits, and a specific Beef Marble Score denoting the concentration of marbling on the meat, translating to a richness of flavor.

Described as the greatest and deepest umami flavor experience, Japanese A5 steak is the highest quality and the most genuine form of Wagyu. “While American and Australian Wagyu beef are each entirely valid in their own right as Wagyu, Japanese Wagyu beef is really the genuine article,” Nicholas Fiorentino, founder of Wagyu vendor The Meatery, explains more on the concept of Japanese Wagyu. “There are some things about Japanese Wagyu that just can’t be replicated when you’re considering every factor. Things like the environment determine how much the cattle can roam, and the feeding habits are going to be a little different, but the point is that Japanese A5 Wagyu is produced using the original and most rigorous standards.”

“The Original and Most Rigorous Standards”

The Japanese government forbade the export of live Wagyu cattle, and even their DNA, before a period between 1975 and 1997 when a small number of Wagyu were taken to countries like Australia and the US. Japan maintains the largest Wagyu population, as since 1997 no additional Wagyu cattle or DNA has left the borders of the country.

As a relatively small island nation with mountainous terrain, there isn’t much viable land for raising cattle. Limiting space and therefore making raising the cattle more expensive, Japanese Wagyu cattle also go through long and specifically outlined feeding cycles and diets to ensure top quality. Japanese Wagyu cattle are fed for at least 600 days if not more before slaughter. The extensive feeding cycle of Japanese Wagyu cattle leads to the cattle being larger and fattier with a more robust tenderness. Japanese Wagyu cattle are fed using the Total Mixed Ration system (TMR) which consists of grains, wheat, and barley.

The most expensive form of Wagyu in comparison to American and Australian counterparts, Japan’s specific environment plays an important role in producing the best Japanese A5 Wagyu beef.
